![]() The word manuscript means “hand write.” These manuscripts encompass a wide variety of topics from religion, court life and history to literature, medicine, food and crafts. A subset of it was illustrated manuscripts, which were produced in ancient Egypt, China, Japan, the Mideast and America and later in Europe. A handpicked selection of stories from BBC Future, Earth, Culture, Capital, Travel and Autos, delivered to your inbox every Friday. For thousands of years before the advent of the printing press in the 15th century, painting filled the role of illustration in cultures worldwide. There won't be many modern visitors who will be convinced of that but take a look at the images yourself and you will be transported into a magical world of awe-inspiring skill. Recent research has shown that books were used in religious processions, enhancing the notion that they were almost objects of worship themselves or at least had talismanic properties for a medieval populace. The large pages and illustrations could be seen from further back in the church to make an impact on a congregation that for the most part couldn't read or write. So why did the monks go to so much trouble to create these amazing pages? It's as if the book itself flaunted the spiritual qualities of the text to those who saw it. The Secret of Kells, an animated feature about a young boy’s passion for the manuscript was nominated for an Oscar. One of the experts on the manuscript Bernard Meehan writes "For many in Ireland it symbolises the power of learning, the impact of Christianity on the life of the country, and the spirit of artistic imagination.” That's true for the tens of thousands of visitors who pay homage to the manuscript each year and it’s even captured the imagination of filmmakers. The 11th Century Annals of Ulster describe the Book of Kells as “ primh-mind iarthair domain”, “the most precious object of the Western world”. There monks created the lovely Lindisfarne Gospel but the Irish would claim the Book of Kells is the finest of its kind. Monks from the original monastery founded by St Columba also set up other monastic communities including one on the great rock of Lindisfarne in Northumberland, established by the Ionan monk Aidan in 635. The Book of Kells isn’t the only illuminated manuscript in the so-called insular style. This is a description thought by many to be of the Book of Kells by the 12th Century writer Gerald of Wales: Practically all of the 680 pages are decorated in some way or another. On some pages every corner is filled with the most detailed and beautiful Celtic designs. Written on vellum, it is estimated that the skins of 185 calves were needed for the project. The scale and ambition of The Book of Kells is incredible. ![]() A few years later it reached Trinity College where it remains today. ![]() According to the Annals of Ulster it was found “two months and twenty days” later “under a sod.” After fighting in the Cromwellian period, the church at Kells lay in ruins, and in 1653 the book was sent to Dublin by the governor of Kells for safekeeping. But medieval sources do record that an illuminated manuscript was stolen from the stone church of Kells in 1006 which is likely to have been the Book of Kells. The most likely theory is that the monks took the manuscript with them.Īmazingly since they were written, the majority of the pages have been passed down through the generations with just 60 pages missing. In 806, following a raid that left 68 of the community dead, the Columban monks took refuge in a newly-founded monastery at Kells in County Meath in Ireland to keep them safe. The monastery, like many early Christian communities, came under the threat of Viking raids. But it wasn't just forces of nature with which the monks had to contend. ![]() ![]() ![]() As a creative, it is wonderful to have such control over a number of different factors in a project. Its many adjustable menus, brush options and project options mean that Procreate is one of the most versatile and powerful creative apps on the market. The app doesn't just look great with its minimalistic and easy-to-navigate interface either – it is incredibly streamlined. The level of detail, choice, and flexibility offered is incredible for a budget app, and an essential companion to your new iPad Pro. The app is not only brilliant but also the community of Procreate users is supportive and informative, helping you find new ways to streamline your work process and fix any issues you have with the app. The standalone app price is a mere $9.99/£9.99 too, which with these features and at this price, is unmissable. It's not just 3D tools, Procreate 5.3 adds new features that take advantage of Apple's M1 chip (Image credit: Savage) Procreate 5.3 review: Price and should you buy it? It would have been nice to get some automated UVing tools to make it easy to bring in any model seamlessly, but I’m sure there will be future updates if this is a successful release. You can now even bring in PDFs and annotate them making it a great app for a wider audience to consider. There is a new Page Assist feature that allows you to view all of your sketch ideas in a convenient sketchbook format, which is fantastic news for storyboard artists and comic book illustrators. If you are lucky enough to have a 16GB iPad Pro you can now take advantage of bigger documents and even more layers. The non-3D updates include a much better stroke stabilisation feature for when you are creating your own Procreate brushes. Being able to check out your designs in the room you are working in is quite liberating and it won't be long before we see some really exciting things created with this update. This shows where we are heading and it is fantastic that Savage has seen to add this feature to this update rather than save it for Procreate 6. There is an option to see your texture flattened out too, which means you can also bring in other images or textures and add them in a more 2D way.Īn amazing new feature is that with the click of a button you can be viewing your model on your desk using an AR feature right there in Procreate. You can use any Procreate brush or feature so things like Smudge are great for mixing up paint that is already on the model. You can add new lights, colour them, change the HDRI (backgrounds that will reflect in your model). There is a new 3D tab that gives you access to lighting and the environment. There are sub-layers for roughness and 'metalness', which simply means you can enhance your painting with reflectivity and decide how much your material needs to look like metal. If the model has separate parts you can tap the part you want to paint on, and off you go. ![]() It has layers in the same way a flat document does. You begin by importing the model you want to paint. That's the beauty of this update, you can use your existing skills and workflow, but now in 3D. In fact, as long as you already know how to use Procreate there isn’t actually anything much new to get to grips with. The 3D painting process is very easy to learn. ![]() The same tools and workflow remain, but now you're painting 3D models. There are five options within the colour settings that allow you to work with either a colour wheel, traditional colour picker, adjustable colour value settings or your homemade palettes, as well as the 'harmony' menu that helps you to choose the colours that'll complement the hues you're using in your project – nifty stuff. This is a brilliant tool to use, and having your favourite colour selections all there in one place eliminates the hassle of having to use the colour picker over and over again. Procreate makes use of incredibly powerful colour settings that allows you to customise and save colours and palettes. One of the main selling points of Procreate is its versatile colour menu. And you can even hide the menus if you don't like seeing them when you're working – just tap on the screen with four fingers to hide it. You can turn on Light Mode if you prefer to work in a brighter setting, flip the interface horizontally (to suit all you lefties out there), and even switch on the 'Brush Cursor' so you can see exactly where you're working on the canvas. You can modify your interface to suit your workflow and optimise your process. The app has a number of menus, sliders and toggles that makes Procreate easy to navigate and incredibly customisable. Procreate sports a minimalistic interface with simplistic icons and settings tucked away so as not to subtract from your project. Procreate's interface is fairly simple (Image credit: Future) ![]() ![]() Whether an element is more specific or more general can be measured objectively by the number of hits retrieved in a database when searching for a key term representing that element. Using the schema in Figure 1, elements can be ordered by their specificity and importance to determine the best search approach. Therefore, the number of elements in a search strategy should remain as low as possible to optimize recall. ![]() Adding an element to a search strategy increases the chance of missing relevant references. Some elements are less important than others or may unnecessarily complicate or restrict a search strategy. Not all elements of a research question should necessarily be used in the search strategy. Decide which elements should be used for the best results Experienced searchers will gain the most from reading about the novelties in the method as described in steps 10–13 and comparing the examples given in the supplementary appendix to their own practice.Ĥ. More experienced searchers can consider the basic steps to be existing knowledge that will already be part of their normal workflow, although step 4 probably differs from general practice. Readers who are new to SR searching are advised to follow all steps described. Īs we aimed to describe the creation of systematic searches in full detail, the method starts at a basic level with the analysis of the research question and the creation of search terms. The efficiency of the search method and outcome of 73 searches that have resulted in published reviews are described in a separate article. In this article, we describe the method developed at Erasmus University Medical Center (MC) and demonstrate its use through an example search. The authors wanted to develop systematic and exhaustive search strategies more efficiently, while preserving the high sensitivity that SR search strategies necessitate. ![]() Traditional methods of SR search strategy development and execution are highly time consuming, reportedly requiring up to 100 hours or more. Although several recommendations for the process of searching have been published, none describe the development of a systematic search strategy from start to finish. Librarians and information specialists are often involved in the process of preparing and completing systematic reviews (SRs), where one of their main tasks is to identify relevant references to include in the review. The described method can be used to create complex and comprehensive search strategies for different databases and interfaces, such as those that are needed when searching for relevant references for systematic reviews, and will assist both information specialists and practitioners when they are searching the biomedical literature. This method helps information specialists in developing librarian-mediated searches for systematic reviews as well as medical and health care practitioners who are searching for evidence to answer clinical questions. ![]() ![]() Macros in Microsoft Word have been developed to convert syntaxes between databases and interfaces almost automatically. To help ensure term completeness, we developed a novel optimization technique that is mainly based on comparing the results retrieved by thesaurus terms with those retrieved by the free-text search words to identify potentially relevant candidate search terms. This method describes how single-line search strategies can be prepared in a text document by typing search syntax (such as field codes, parentheses, and Boolean operators) before copying and pasting search terms (keywords and free-text synonyms) that are found in the thesaurus. The authors have established a method that describes step by step the process of developing a systematic search strategy as needed in the systematic review. Several methods describe standards for systematic search strategies, but a consistent approach for creating an exhaustive search strategy has not yet been fully described in enough detail to be fully replicable. Creating search strategies for systematic reviews, finding the best balance between sensitivity and specificity, and translating search strategies between databases is challenging. ![]() ![]() ![]() "How?" A reader will also want to know whether the claims of the thesis are true in all cases. If it does, the essay will lack balance and may read as mere summary or description. ![]() But be forewarned: it shouldn't take up much more than a third (often much less) of your finished essay. Since you're essentially reporting what you've observed, this is the part you might have most to say about when you first start writing. This "what" or "demonstration" section comes early in the essay, often directly after the introduction. "What?" The first question to anticipate from a reader is "what": What evidence shows that the phenomenon described by your thesis is true? To answer the question you must examine your evidence, thus demonstrating the truth of your claim. If they don't, your thesis is most likely simply an observation of fact, not an arguable claim.) It's helpful to think of the different essay sections as answering a series of questions your reader might ask when encountering your thesis. Background material (historical context or biographical information, a summary of relevant theory or criticism, the definition of a key term) often appears at the beginning of the essay, between the introduction and the first analytical section, but might also appear near the beginning of the specific section to which it's relevant. Counterargument, for example, may appear within a paragraph, as a free-standing section, as part of the beginning, or before the ending. Introductions and conclusions have fixed places, but other parts don't. Even short essays perform several different operations: introducing the argument, analyzing data, raising counterarguments, concluding. Although there are guidelines for constructing certain classic essay types (e.g., comparative analysis), there are no set formula.Īnswering Questions: The Parts of an EssayĪ typical essay contains many different kinds of information, often located in specialized parts or sections. Thus your essay's structure is necessarily unique to the main claim you're making. It dictates the information readers need to know and the order in which they need to receive it. The focus of such an essay predicts its structure. Successfully structuring an essay means attending to a reader's logic. Because essays are essentially linear-they offer one idea at a time-they must present their ideas in the order that makes most sense to a reader.
